FLINDERS DAY – 18th July 2010

This Sunday, 18th July, is Flinders Day on Coochiemudlo Island once again, the annual commemoration and celebration of that fateful day in July 1799 when Lt Matthew Flinders arrived on the island while exploring Moreton Bay on the sloop Norfolk.

This historical event will be re-enacted during the day, complete with the landing of Lt Flinders on (now) Norfolk Beach and the presence of local people in period costume. There will be a parade and, of course, the Coochie Craft Markets will be open on the day.

Flinders Day activities

8:00am	Coochie Craft Markets open
9:30am	Parade commences, including floats and period costume dress
11:30am	Re-enactment of Matthew Flinders' landing on Norfolk Beach
12:30pm	Outrigger and Dragon Boat races

How to get to Coochiemudlo Island? Take the ferry or the barge for a short, pleasant ride off Victoria Point Jetty.

Golf carts

Do you have golf carts for hire to get around the island? My parents want to visit but my father has knee problems and wont be able to walk around. If you do have could you please tell me the cost and where we could pick them up. Also, are they 2 or 4 seaters. Thank you Vee

Coochie RSL sub-branch meeting and dinner – 8 May 2010

The next general meeting will be held on Saturday evening, 8 May, at 5 pm, followed by a roast dinner evening (3 courses) at $25 per double.

Children fun for Flinders Day?

We participated in the Easter Carnival on Stradbroke Island with our laughing clowns, lucky ducks, lucky dips and streamers, and the children had such fun. A lady from Coochie suggested I contact the organisers for events on your island. We would love to hear from you. Please phone 34088787.

Garden Club and History Society – trip to Gold Coast Monday 19 April, 2010

The Island's Garden Club and History Society have combined to organise a trip by bus to visit the Gold Coast and Hinterland History Society.

Tucked away on Elliott Street is one of the last surviving hind dunes dating back 20,000 years. We will see displays of the Gold Coast pre-glitz and high-rise. The local garden club has combined with the Society to establish a wonderful native garden. After morning tea with the Society we will visit the Rosser Botanical Garden for a BYO picnic lunch. The gardens have been developed only over recent years and the design and plants are said to be delightful. And on the way home – after feeding the soul – we will have the chance to feed the body when we stop at the famous Yatala Pies.

Cost is $29, including morning tea. 8.45 am ferry departure from the Island, returning on 5.30 pm ferry. BYO picnic lunch. Payment appreciated on or before 12 April, 2010.

The Bards of Coochie meeting – 12th April 2010

The Bards of Coochie, a small group of poets and writers and those interested in poetry and literature will be meeting again on Monday 12th April in the Recreation Hall at 2p.m.
