Biggles’ Bugle #110 (28/7/2008)
FLINDERS DAY   What a superb day, we could not have asked for better.  To add to Normas’ and my delight, we had family, Reg and Kerry visit for the event.  Some of you may remember that Son, Reg and a few of his friends took care of overnight security in the big marquee at the [...]

Victoria Point Jetty

Coochiemudlo Island is one in the group of islands (with MacLeay, Russell, Lamb and Karragarra Islands) dotting the southern part of Moreton Bay. It is approximately 40 kilometres southeast of the Brisbane city center and 70 kilometres north of the Gold Coast.

TAKEOFF POINT:  VICTORIA POINT JETTY

To get to Coochie, you need to get to the Victoria Point jetty (not Redland Bay jetty) on Masters Avenue and then take a short (< 10 minutes), pleasant ferry/barge ride across the bay to the island. Coochie is in plain view from the Victoria Point jetty.  Ferry and barge services to Coochiemudlo Island are available only from the Victoria Point jetty on Masters Avenue.

If using public transport, we suggest that you use Translink's journey planner to Translinkcheck out the different ways to get to Coochie. It automatically develops travel options via public transport based on the origin and destination points of your trip (feel free to use 10-16 Dawn Street, Coochiemudlo Island for your destination point — this is the home of Coochie Island Resort). Alternatively, you can also call Translink on 13 12 30.

There are two ways to get to the Victoria Point Jetty via public transport:

  • Through Cleveland – Train service is available to Cleveland.  From there, you need to grab a bus to the Victoria Point Shops, and then another bus from there to the Victoria Point Jetty
  • Through Capalaba – Both the 270 and 271 will take you to the Victoria Point Jetty from Capalaba .

If you're taking off from Brisbane, the 271 (1 hour, 40 minutes) and the 279 (1 hour, 20 minutes) will take you right at the doorstep of the Victoria Point Jetty.

The relevant bus routes terminating at the Victoria Point Jetty:

  • 270 Victoria Point Jetty – Capalaba (Victoria Point and Alexandra Hills via Redland Bay Road)
  • 271 Victoria Point Jetty – Brisbane (via Pt Halloran, Victoria Point bus station, Alexandra Hills, Capalaba, Chandler and Buranda)
  • 277 Victoria Point Jetty – Victoria Point Shops and Point Halloran
  • 278 Victoria Point Jetty – Victoria Point High School and Victoria Point Shops
  • 279 Victoria Point Jetty – Brisbane via Eight Miles Plain (through Victoria Point, Sheldon, Garden City (Upper Mt Gravatt), Griffith University and Buranda)

Download a copy of the timetables for all the above bus routes (PDF, 558KB).

If using private transport, we are unable to recommend an online tool to assist you with your journey. WhereIS.com would have you take off from the Redland Bay jetty! Be aware that ferry and barge services to Coochiemudlo Island are only available from the Victoria Point jetty on Masters Avenue. GoogleMaps is better in terms of accuracy, though it seems to take a roundabout way of getting to Coochie — it takes an hour and a half from the Brisbane city centre for a trip that we know for a fact takes no more than 40-45 minutes.

PARKING AROUND VICTORIA POINT JETTY

There are free 6-, 12- and 18-hour public parking areas in the immediate vicinity of the jetty.  However, Coochie residents already use these parking slots heavily (parking on the mainland is a continuing issue for Islanders).  Additionally, on weekends, some of these parking slots are designated for vehicles with boat trailers.

You will find that, during holiday weekends, in particular, parking can be very tight around the jetty.  Please follow the parking restriction notices as Redland City Council (RCC) will have no qualms issuing parking tickets to those who do not.  There are unlimited parking areas a bit further away — inconvenient,  perhaps, but better that betting your luck against RCC.

The other option, if you're in a group of at least 6 adults, is to take your car with you to Coochie:  barge fee is $45 return, while adult fare on the ferry is $6.80 return per person.  If you do, please be considerate when you're driving on the island: drive like you're on a shared pathway (with pedestrians, kids on bikes — and all the two- and four-legged residents who have no idea what a speeding vehicle will do to them) and do not unnecessarily stir dust in unpaved roads (it makes for a miserable day to nearby residents).
