FLINDERS DAY
What a superb day, we could not have asked for better. To add to Normas’ and my delight, we had family, Reg and Kerry visit for the event. Some of you may remember that Son, Reg and a few of his friends took care of overnight security in the big marquee at the 1999 Bi-Centennial celebrations.
Join in Flinders Day fun
16 July, 2008
Bayside Bulletin - 14/7/2008
COME along and join in the fun when the annual Flinders Day celebration takes place on Coochiemudlo Island on Sunday, July 20.
The event commemorates the discovery of Coochie by Lt Matthew Flinders of Her Majesty’s Sloop ‘Norfolk’ on July 19, 1799.
There will be a number of firsts this year, including the rowing ashore of a uniformed Matthew Flinders (aka Mark Bowden) by members of the Flomersfeld family (descendants of the original explorer’s family).
They will be aboard the klinker built Trim, which was presented to the island’s History Society a number of years ago by the T.S. Norfolk and which has been lovingly restored and was christened last Flinders Day weekend.
The boat was proudly rowed by several locals after being launched by Coochiemudlo History Society president Carolyn Brammer on May 24 this year.
Accompanying the Trim for the first time will be a number of vessels from the Wooden Boat Association.
Craft markets open at 8am on Sunday with many stalls including Aussie tea and damper and the licensed Norfolk Bar.
Neighbourhood Watch - Update 7/7/2008
10 July, 2008
There have been two reported incidents of unlawful entry and theft of alcohol. Both were reported to Police.
On or about the night of Friday the 27th June, there was an incident at the Community Hall where a park bench, 2 chairs and a quantity of china (flying saucers.? N) and toilet paper were thrown from the back of the hall area down onto the beach and rocks. Public spirited persons gathered the majority of fragments and placed them on the larger rock along with the two chairs for later removal.
Late on Saturday night/Sunday morning a number of bottles were broken in the park area cnr. Tageruba St. and Victoria Pde. Sth. Also, the fire hose was run out and drawn down across the road in the vicinity of No. 356 and 360 Victoria Pde. The vandalism was reported to Redland Bay Police on Monday.
More recently, notices appeared relating to projectiles being directed at a family whilst they were crossing the Golf Course from the beach to the car park. The complainant claims that two of the alleged juvenile offenders are known and if you have a similar experience, please contact Peta and Cleveland Police on 392 94111.
An anonymous sign appeared on the notice board referring to a car owner chasing their stolen vehicle and observing two teenage boys running away leaving two bicycles.

Debate on our urban sprawl
8 July, 2008
Redland Times - 7/7/2008
STRATEGIES for combating urban sprawl are among the issues to be discussed during a debate on ‘What is the Sustainable Population for the Redlands’ later this month when a leading QUT academic presents her views.
Senior lecturer in urban design and architecture Dr Kathi Holt-Damant, who is currently involved in various government and academic advisory groups examining new approaches to sustainable urban design, will be one of the guest speakers.
Urban sprawl is the continual spreading of a city and its suburbs over rural land at the fringe of the urban area.
This causes loss of farms, forests and related ecosystems to developments, and residents of sprawling neighborhoods tend to commute by car to work, adding to traffic congestion and air pollution problems.

New projects to help islands
8 July, 2008
Redland Times - 7/7/2008
A resident and visitor Welcome Information Kit and a Combined Island Community Forum are among several projects Redland City Council will support in 2008-09 as part of its commitment to the Southern Moreton Bay Islands and Redlands Place Project.
The place project is a collaboration between state and local governments that aims to address community needs, issues and aspirations on the islands and social infrastructure needs of emerging communities in southern Redland Bay.
Redland Mayor Melva Hobson said council had allocated funding and staff resources in its 2008-09 budget for the place project to work with island community organisations on priority projects.
